Tony's Triathlon Page

On Sunday October 7th, 2007 I completed a Sprint Triathlon in Elma, Washington. It consisted of a 300 Meter Swim, 13 Mile Bike, and a 3 Mile Run. I finished in 1 Hour, 21 Minutes, and 55 Seconds. 8 minutes under my goal! The only portion I have a split time for is the bike: 43:53.

As you might be able to tell in the pictures, the weather was not cooperative. It started pouring rain as I got out of the water (which by the way was freezing!), and continued until I had about a mile left in the run, when it started dumping buckets. I was working hard enough to stay warm the whole time, and in some ways I pushed myself harder just to get out of the weather.

I took 8th place overall! As you start to build pictures in your head of me doing great, let me fill in the rest of the picture. due to the weather over ½ of the registered people didn't show up, leaving 15 starters. 9 Men, and 6 Women. The only guy I beat had a flat tire on his bike.

With that said, I feel great about my accomplishment! I am really looking forward to training this winter and getting ready to do several sprint triathlons next year, and at least one Olympic distance triathlon (.93 Mile swim, 24.8 Mile Bike, and 6.2 Mile Run). I am also planning on doing a half marathon at some point next year as well.

My First Triathlon Experience: National Lampoons Kirkland Triathlon...

(Sept 16, 2007) On Thursday I came down with a really bad cold. I slept a lot, so took Airborne, Vitamin C, Zinc, and everything else I could think of. I felt better last night as I got into bed, and woke up feeling OK. I was still congested and not 100%. I still felt pretty optimistic. I waited patiently for the 12 other waves of people to start, almost an hour, and then got into the water. About half of the people doing the Tri-It division were first timers. I had a good swim, only drank lake water a couple of time; at least I would be hydrated for the rest of the race! I finished pretty much in the middle of the pack of people I started with. I felt really good at that point. I ran over to my bike, got my helmet on, shoes laced, and headed for the bike start. I jumped on, clicked in, and as soon as I started peddling it was like the gear shifters had been moved dramatically since I set the bike up the day before. My bike leg only lasted about 20 more feet, I looked down to try and sort out what was happening and saw that the rear derailleur (the part that shifts the gears) had come apart, and about that time the chain came off.

I jumped off, grabbed the bike, the parts on the ground that I could find, and headed back to the Bike Aid Station. Unfortunately, they were not able to help me. I couldn't find one of the nuts that had fallen off and they had very limited supplies of parts with them. We weren't able to put her back together, so my race came to an abrupt end, much too early.

Time to start training for the next triathlon! I really had a good time and enjoyed preparing for the race. Now I just have to find another race to do that fits into my schedule!
